The Masai Mara National Reserve is the most popular destination on most Kenya safaris due to the quality and quantity of game viewed in the park. Lions, leopards, buffaloes, elephants and rhinos—known as the "Big Five"—may be spotted here as well as giraffe and a variety of antelope. And, over a million zebras and wildebeests migrate each year to Masai Mara from the dry Serengeti plains of nearby Tanzania (The Great Migration). Many Kenya safaris also visit local Masai villages, where travelers can engage with local tribesmen and buy their crafts.

In Samburu Game Reserve, located in Northern Kenya, visitors will find a small oasis that is home to many hard-to-find animals such as Grevy's zebras, long-necked gerenuk antelopes, Somali ostriches and reticulated giraffes. Amboseli National Park in Kenya is famous for its large game, including lions, cheetahs, baboons and big elephant herds that cross the savannahs in search of food and watering holes. Some Kenya safaris also take you to Lake Nakuru National Park, a smaller preserve that has been selected as a rhino sanctuary and is known as one of the top locations for observing birds.

Kenya safaris often visit Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, which enjoyed its heyday in the early 1900s after the construction of a railroad to the Indian Ocean. While in Nairobi, travelers may see museums or the nearby farm of Karen Blixen, author of "Out of Africa."

Kenya safaris are available twelve months a year, though the top game-viewing occurs during the dry months of May through August and the hotter spring months of September and October.
